Getting There

Visa Requirements and Process – The visa process isn’t simple but is very well-defined. You can get all the details of the requirements from here. Just follow this. The visa application is accepted at the consulate from 9 to 11 am. You will go through the black gate, keep your phone and other belongings in a locker, take the key, register your name, and then enter.

Like Japanese culture, the embassy is very serene and simple. You go through a courtyard and enter a cabin where there are three windows. Once you enter, the intercom will ring. Go to the window and talk via the intercom. They will take your application along with all your passports and may inquire about a few things if necessary. I wasn’t asked a single question.

They will hand you a slip that mentions the date of collection, which is the fifth working day in most tourist visa cases.

I got a call to submit an additional document, which was the Certificate of Tax Deducted on Income (Salary), to an email mentioned in the receipt. My email was responded to within 4 hours, and the visa collection was on the same day as mentioned in the receipt.

You collect the visa through the same entry process at the designated time mentioned in the receipt.

Oh, and most importantly the visa was free of charge!!

Update: As of April 2023, the visa is now being submitted at VFS Global – Bahria Complex, with a prior appointment (acquired through website), its just the document submission and can turnaround time is 7 days: you can see the the updated fee here.

Traveling to Japan – Tickets to Japan are generally on a higher side, I flew through Etihad and took a transit visa to combat 24 hours long transit. While all major airlines i.e., Emirates, Etihad, Thai Airways, Air China flies to Japan, the best in terms of time is Thai Airways. If booked well in advance Thai Airways will be affordable.

Customs and Immigration – When you receive your passport, you will receive a printed QR code. Make sure to complete your registration in advance to avoid long lines. You will also have to keep the QR code open to show at the counter.

Customs and immigration can be a bit of a hassle as you will need to fill out at least two forms despite registering in advance. The system is divided into three processes. First, you will scan your passport, then go to the counter to get your visa stamped and scan the QR code. Lastly, you will fill out a customs declaration form before leaving the airport.

Lines are super long, so allocate a generous amount of time between landing and any scheduled activities.

Basics

Food –Japan has a growing Muslim community, so if you’re a Muslim worried about what to eat, you do have plenty of options. Almost all cities have halal ramen, wagyu, and other local dishes. The options at convenience stores are also good; just turn around and check the label! I enjoyed having vegetable options everywhere including the convenience store, a Halal Ramen and Wagyu and tons tons of Japanese sweets.

Transactions – Card works everywhere including small vendors/shops. You will need Cash for Vending Machines and may be some carts!

Intercity Travel – Japan has an extensive metro system that is accessible to almost every location. Buy a Pasmo Card from the airport, and you’re good to go. It works everywhere and on every transport except the Shinkansen, which needs to be paid for separately. Also, keep an eye on air travel, as it is sometimes cheaper than the train for longer routes, especially.

@qasasulsafar Zuishoji Temple, Minato-ku, Tokyo is the main temple in Tokyo of the Obaku Sect, one of the three Zen schools brought to Japan from China by the Priest Ingen during the Edo Period. In 2018, Kengo Kuma Architects added a U-shaped cloister on the south side of the axis so that the temple could be more accessible to the community. At the center of the courtyard is a water pool with a raised stage to encourage people to hold events and performances for the community. The wooden joists and louvers on the exterior resonate with each other and create a geometric pattern that highlights the uniqueness of Obaku Sect. #architecture #kkaa #qasasulsafar #kengokuma #buddisttemple #japan #tokyo #wanderingarchitect #architecturelovers #beautifuldestinations @Japan Travel ♬ original sound – Qasasul Safar

Stays, Tours & Safety

Hotels: I booked via booking.com, works smoothly, always! I also got two amazing deals at agoda.com, so I booked two hotels there.

Tours: I found the tours overpriced and very run off the mill, so I ended booking everything directly. It’s cheaper and you are more in control. The only tour I took was Kyoto Geisha Old Town via Viator.com and it was totally worth it!

Safety – Do I need to say its Super Safe?
